Contribution to others comes in many forms. At Vidzu Media, we are committed to serving our community. On September 11, 2019, our Executive Vice President, John Launius was asked to emcee the inaugural 9/11 Day Meal Pack at Chaifetz Arena.
A few months after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a group of 9/11 family members and friends, led by David Paine and Jay Winuk, met to talk about how best to pay tribute to their lost loved ones. They decided that the terrorists shouldn’t have the last word in defining how America remembers 9/11 each year for generations to come. They wanted to “take back the day.”
Inspired by the remarkable spirit of national unity and support that swept the nation in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks, they decided to transform 9/11 from a day of tragedy into a day of doing good. Their idea was simple: Turn 9/11 into a day of service and unity. And ask all Americans to do just one good deed on the anniversary of 9/11 each year in tribute to the 9/11 victims, first responders, members of our military and the many others who rose in service in response to the terrorist attacks. That little idea has grown into the nation’s most important annual day of service, called 9/11 Day, a federally-recognized Day of Service. Today tens of millions of people from all walks of life are spending time helping others, by volunteering, supporting charities, and performing other good deeds.
